Front outside of Heaton Middle School

What began as a middle school to serve the then-booming Belmont neighborhood in 1960, Heaton Middle School has truly transformed into a school that serves all of Pueblo, becoming a destination for students from all corners of the city.

Heaton prides itself on preparing its students to be high-achievers, which shines through in its signature focus on its AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. AVID empowers students by explicitly teaching them the hidden curriculum of the school by developing time management, organization, interactive note taking, inquiry, collaboration, writing, and reading skills. Heaton showcases its commitment to the AVID approach to learning with its designation at one of five "AVID Demonstration School" in Colorado.

Heaton offers students a myriad of opportunities to find their niche, exposing them to numerous programs and activities designed to inspire children down their future path, and teaching them to do what Heaton Hawks do — Soar!

About the School Name

Opened in 1960 as Heaton Junior High, the school is named for Wilbur M. Heaton, whose 25-year association with Centennial High as an instructor and principal began in 1914.

A true Renaissance Man, the Pennsylvania-born Mr. Heaton applied for a U.S. patent on a speedometer with a liquid reservoir in 1912: "an exceedingly simple and yet reliable speedometer adapted for use with automobiles and other mechanically propelled vehicles to indicate the speed at which the machine is traveling."

Mr. Heaton was a Major in the Chemical Warfare Officers Reserve Corps after World War I and also operated a general store in Pueblo.

He lived on 13th Street with his wife Gertrude and daughter Mary. Mr. Heaton died in 1944.
