Title I Compact

Overview

Heaton Middle School and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the State’s high academic standards.

Heaton Middle School will:

Provide a high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards as follows:

• Positive Behavior support instruction for academic and behavior expectations
• “Highly Qualified” teachers in every classroom support rigor and depth of knowledge in data-driven instruction, promoting student growth, and mastery of skills needed to meet the educational challenges of the 21st century
• Advisory Classes for All Students
• Professional Learning Communities will ensure that teachers are prepared for instruction aligned to state and national standards, assessment data  is analyzed to examine trends and determine next steps, and instructional adjustments are made to ensure every child learns at his maximum potential
• Provide AVID, an instructional strategies based program that prepares students for college
• Provide Honors classes to challenge all students in English, Math, Social Studies, and Science
• Provide after school tutoring for all students in core classes

Hold parent-teacher conferences during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement.  Specifically, those conferences will be held:

• During October 2023
• Mid-Quarter grade checks at 4-5 weeks
• Parent-Teacher Conference upon request by a parent

Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.  Specifically, the school will provide reports as follows:

• Inform parents of all school events/meetings as well and encourage parents to attend
• Mid-Quarter grade reports
• Quarterly report cards
• Weekly Missing Assignment reports through phone messenger

Provide parents reasonable access to staff.  Specifically, staff will be available for consultation with parents as follows:

• Hold an annual “Open House” to meet staff and learn about Title I programs
• Parent Portal school website at www.pueblod60.org
• School emails are provided on the school website, www.pueblod60.org/heaton
• School or classroom phone messages
• Staff available before/after school by telephone, email, and appointment

Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities, as follows:

• Involve parents in the annual planning, review, and improvement of the School Parent Involvement Policy
• Make arrangements with the classroom teacher for a time and specific volunteer activities
• Make the School Parent Involvement Policy, school newsletters, and informational literature available in the Parent Resource Center located at www.pueblod60.org/heaton

Parent Responsibilities

We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

• Making sure that homework is completed
• Attend School Events and Activities (Music Performances, Title I Family Nights, Open House)
• Communicate with the school whenever there is a concern to build a partnership between school and family
• Ensure my child is dressed in school uniform daily
• Monitor Social Media
• Review School Messenger to keep up with school functions and important information

Student Responsibilities

We, as students, will share the responsibility to improve our academic achievement and achieve the State’s high standards.  Specifically, we will:

• Come prepared for class every day and ready to learn.
• Doing my part to learn all I can - My future depends on it.
• Follow all school rules.
• Help make our school a safe place for all students
• Strive to earn a 3.0 or better GPA
• Striving for 95% attendance

Title One Programs and Plan

• Inform parents about goals and purposes of Title I, curriculum used in Title I programs, academic assessments used to measure student progress, and proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
• Involve parents in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs at school.
• If the Title I Plan is not satisfactory to the parents, submit parent comments on the plan to the district.
• If requested by parents, provide opportunities for regular meetings where parents may offer suggestions or ask questions.
• Provide timely responses to parent’s suggestions/questions.
• Provide assistance to parents, as appropriate, in understanding assessments, Title I requirements, monitoring academic progress, and how to work together to improve student achievement.
